Aside from all the off-field drama about extreme human rights abuses and unbridled corporate corruption, the first two days of the 2022 FIFA World Cup has provided us with the exciting football that makes it allllll okay.

It started with a chilling November 20 opening ceremony, which was basically just another opportunity for Qatar to tell us that everything is completely normal in their country and that gays don’t exist in the desert for some reason.

This was followed by the inaugural match, where Ecuador immediately humbled the host nation by handing them a 2-0 loss, in a 90 minute battering.

Day 2 started with England’s 6-2 win over Iran. This blow-out scoreline was the last thing the Iranians needed – as their government attempts to join Qatar in using the world game to gloss over the fact that they are executing their own women for questioning state-mandated dress codes.

The Dutch caught up to Ecuador in Group A thanks to a 2-0 win over African champions Senegal. Day 2 then wrapped up with Wales scoring a late penalty to finish with a 1-1 draw against the USA.

With all the highs, lows and scandals of the first 4 matches – it seems we are in for an exciting couple weeks.

However, local Italian mate Adam Marino (30) says he hasn’t been watching.

“Saw a few of the highlights…. It looks like a real shit quality this year haha”

“Rubbish haha”

“Not worth watching.”
